Magnetized

From Chris Tucker, a Miskatonic Antarctic expedition sticker turned into a refrigerator magnet.

One of the delights of my life is seeing my stuff out in the wild, so to speak.

Making the magnet was fairly easy.

Here in Boston, Verizon phone directories arrive with fridge magnets advertising a law firm.

So, first off, one needs to get the printed advertising off the magnet. A few moments work with a fingernail gets a corner of the plastic lamination lifted off the paper the ad is printed on and that plastic can then be peeled off.

Soaking the flexible rubber magnet in hot water for a few minutes is enough to soften the paper to the point where all most all of it can be scraped off with a fingernail, butterknife, etc.

What's left is then removed with a ball of nylon netting. One can find bags of these in dollar stores, some supermarkets, etc. Use the ball of netting to scrape off what remains of the paper. You really want to get ALL the little bits off the rubber magnet, as they will cause little bumps in the surface of the sticker.

Now, be aware that there will be a residue of adhesive on the magnet, so be careful when you are about to apply the sticker to the magnet. A stray hair, for example, can ruin the look of the sticker. Also, the combination of adhesives on e sticker and magnet can make it all but impossible to reposition the sticker.

Get it right the first time.

Carefully apply the sticker beginning with an edge and slowly "roll" it onto the magnet. You want to avoid air bubbles. Once the sticker is in place, carefully rub it down. I use a piece of printer paper over the sticker and a smooth round rock to do this.

Finally, cut the sticker out of the surrounding rubber.

TAKE YOUR TIME! You don't want to cut into the sticker.

Affix to any ferrous metal object, such as a refrigerator door and admire your handywork.

Miskatonic, MST3K, Bob Dobbs....you have some amazingly cool magnet art on your fridge!

Btw, you can buy magnetic sheets in craft stores such as Hobby Lobby and Joann Fabrics, so you can make your own magnets by the dozen if you run out of those advertising ones. (Does ANYBODY ever actually stick those things on their refrigerators?)
